Property expert Sidney Phillips has successfully sold the Rhydspence Inn, in the Wye Valley village of Whitney-on-Wye.
The Rhydspence Inn has its origins in the 14th Century (although the existing building according to the listing text was constructed in the 16th Century) and was later a Drover's Inn, a main assembly point for Welsh Drovers as they crossed the border into England. It is a destination pub with eight excellent letting bedrooms, two restaurants and superb gardens.
The Inn stands on the English side of the border with Wales, in extensive grounds with lovely views over farmland and hills beyond the River Wye with the Black Mountains, Brecon Beacons and the Wye Valley all on its doorstep. There is little wonder that many of the guests are interested in fishing, riding, walking and other outdoor pursuits. For the more leisurely tourists there are the many famous black and white villages of Herefordshire and the towns of Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester, Hereford, Shrewsbury and Cardiff which are mostly within about an hour's drive. Virtually on the doorstep is the well-known market town of Hay on Wye, world famous for its book shops and Annual Literary Festival.
Its two bars are full of character and there are two restaurants one of which was purpose built in 1988 and seating 44 at generously spaced tables. The letting bedrooms are all of a high standard and in the past have enjoyed good occupancy, particularly in the summer months. The Rhydspence Inn is located in a prominent position on the A438, highly visible from all directions.
The freehold interest of the Rhydspence Inn was sold off an asking price of £650,000.
