Here at Sidney Phillips, we’re not only enthusiastic about the licensed business we’re selling, we’re also passionate about the pubs, bars, hotels and leisure units in which we spend many an (out of office) hour.
As we draw close to Christmas, we’re being busy elves making sure our clients can have a mindful festive break and, in doing so, we’ve begun dreaming of our own Christmas and New Year plans while making the office coffee round. We’ve realised, perhaps inevitably, that although Christmas Day has been choreographed within an inch of its life- turkey timings scheduled with spreadsheet-like precision and our units of alcohol planned into perfect increments- our New Year’s Eve plans are as fuzzy as we expect our heads to be on 1st January.
As office conversations began to stir about potential venue options to see out the year, we thought we would ask staff members up and down the country to recommend venues in which they could imagine themselves seeing in the year singing merrily to Auld Lang Syne.
At Head Office, Ceiron Griffiths, our Regional Valuations Manager for Midlands and Wales said he can’t imagine many better than the Welsh venue of The Bishops in Saint David’s. The coastal pub in the heart of the UK’s smallest city is, this year, hosting a live music event to see in 2023 and Ceiron said he can’t think of anywhere better to spend New Year’s Eve than ‘this great Pembrokeshire pub’.
Dean McVay, Regional Valuations Manager at our North West office picked the incredibly interesting Bridewell pub in Liverpool. Previously a prison, the property converted its cells into seating areas for the bar. The original architecture was used as a marketing springboard by well-respected Liverpool licensees and the cosy atmosphere of the venue, paired with the impressive selection of world beers means that our resident Scouse, Dean couldn’t imagine a more interesting venue to be locked up in to see out 2022.
Living in the illustrious Home Counties, our Regional Valuations Manager for London & South East, Robert Cockayne, stated that he is declining rapidly into old age and, as a result, has developed allergies against big, noisy venues. For that reason, his recommendation was Ancient Boro, Tenterden. The pub brings a unique and intimate offering in the town with an everchanging range of ales and ciders, cracking tapas and good conversation.
Ray Vilka, Regional Valuations Manager for Yorkshire and Northern Counties noted that York can provide a New Year’s Eve experience that will make your Facebook friends sparkle with envy. His personal recommendation was splashing out on a package at The Grand, a luxury hotel not far from the city centre. Although it would be a special treat for you and a guest to experience the big countdown at a venue that advertises its rooms ‘marble-topped bathtubs’, the worthy investment would make the end to 2022 one to remember.
Finally, Zaine Lamont, Regional Valuations Manager in the Eastern Counties office, said that he has personal experience of seeing in the new year in Home, Lincoln. The club’s themed New Year’s Eve ‘Extravaganzas’ are known to bring the sequins, sparkle, glitz and glamour for the ten second countdown. Their famous ‘annual glitter party’ is well worth a visit if you find yourself in Lincoln at the end of the year.
