In November 2022, Fodor’s Travel released its ‘Go List’ featuring its top six European travel destinations for 2023. The publication, which has provided expert travel advice for 80 years, recommended Rye for ‘easing your way through the cobblestone streets, ancient swellings, and endless antiques in cozy, historic Rye’. Also included in the roundup was Ghent in Belgium, Granada in Spain, Ostuni in Italy, Trondheim in Norway and Crete in Greece. The small East Sussex town with a population of less than 10,000 was pitted against world-famous travel destinations and came out in the top half a dozen European locations.
The town, steeped in history, has been a beloved UK tourist attraction and now seems to be gaining international recognition. This is, in part, due to its proximity to the coast. Less than five miles away from the much-photographed ‘Mermaid Street’ in Rye’s town centre is the illustrious Camber Sands and its 2 miles of picturesque shoreline and sand dunes.
One of the most beloved aspects of Rye’s history is its shipbuilding past. Its identity as a member of the medieval ‘Cinque Ports’ confederation has given it historic prominence as a harbour town and the nautical theme is cut deep into the town. Rye stands on the river at confluence between the rivers Rother, Tillingham and Brede. Many of the towns’ renowned art galleries sell works by local artists and potters and the nature of their work is often heavily influenced by the ebb and flow of life on the water.
On the River Brede stands the substantial River Haven Hotel. The hotel occupies a prominent quayside position in an area of the town well-trodden by tourists. The hotel provides a rare opportunity to own a business built, owned, and operated by the same owners since 1999. The hotel has 22 en-suite hotel rooms, is on a 0.44 acre plot and is currently for sale with Sidney Phillips.
