So, what’s the history? In 2019, Robert Mann wrote a piece for the Morning Advertiser to explain why ‘beers and cheers’ go hand in hand and have done for over a hundred years. Although it began through the collaboration of football grounds and the surrounding public houses, since the advent of technology, many freehouses capitalised on the income they quickly realised would be afforded to them if they promoted the televising of big events.
It makes sense that, with the high prices of the tickets for highly promoted sports fixtures and the impact that globalisation has had on the location of British teams and sportspersons events, the allure of licensed businesses is vast for sports fans. The atmosphere, the alcohol and the ability to meet up with those that share a similar passion for the game is an attractive pull for the average punter.
As the 2022 World Cup continues, we look forward to the potential growth in trade this Autumn/Winter season for those in the licensed trade.
